Flemish Government Introduces Fast-Track Procedure for Onshore Wind Farm Projects
The Flemish government has launched a fast-track procedure to expedite the installation of onshore wind turbines, aiming for 2,800 megawatts (MW) of electricity production by 2030. Key changes include prioritizing appeal procedures, reducing the processing time from over two years to a maximum of nine months.
Additionally, environmental managers will be appointed to assist applicants in finding suitable sites. A new subsidy system will be introduced on January 1, replacing the previous 'green certificates' system, which is designed to support projects without over-subsidizing. Despite only 13 new turbines being installed this year, the Flemish Energy Minister remains optimistic about meeting the 2030 wind energy target, citing granted permits for projects that can produce a third of the total goal.
