Flemish Government Sells Researchpark Zellik to Vrije Universiteit Brussel for Innovation Campus Development
The Flemish government has sold Researchpark Zellik to Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), which intends to transform it into a comprehensive innovation and science campus. Originally established in 1983 and underutilized, the site will undergo further development in collaboration with various partners, building on recent infrastructure projects like the Smart Village Lab and Nexus data center. A master plan will be created to guide the campus's evolution, with VLAIO overseeing the process.

The Flemish government has sold Researchpark Zellik to Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), which plans to develop it into a full-fledged innovation and science campus. Originally acquired by the Fonds Innoveren en Ondernemen from Pfizer in 1983, the land was initially leased for 30 years to knowledge-intensive companies.
However, the area became outdated and underused, prompting a new development plan in 2016 aimed at transforming it into a science campus linked to research-intensive companies. The management structure was reorganized, involving VLAIO, Gemeente Asse, and VUB in operational policies.
The VUB has already completed infrastructure projects like the Smart Village Lab and Nexus data center. Future plans include further development of the campus in collaboration with various partners and the creation of a master plan under the guidance of Team Vlaams Bouwmeester, with VLAIO maintaining a supervisory role.
