Florida Senate Committee Advances Data Center Regulation Bills
The Florida Senate Committee on Regulated Industries unanimously advanced bills aimed at requiring the Public Service Commission to set minimum rate requirements to shield utility customers from rising costs associated with data center energy consumption. Concerns were voiced regarding potential obstacles for new data center developments, while a developer of a large facility in DeSoto County sought exemptions for self-powered operations.

The Florida Senate Committee on Regulated Industries voted 8-0 to advance bills that would require the Public Service Commission to establish minimum rate requirements to protect utility customers from increased costs due to data center power usage. Concerns were raised by an Associated Industries of Florida representative regarding potential development hurdles for new data centers. Jon Brown of DCIP Group, developing a 2-million-square-foot data center in DeSoto County, requested exemptions for self-powered facilities.
