France's Comprehensive Roadmap to Eliminate Fossil Fuels by 2050
France aims to reduce fossil fuel consumption to 40% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. The roadmap consolidates existing policies to transition from fossil fuels and emphasizes large-scale electrification and renewable energy expansion.

France has introduced a 'roadmap' to reduce fossil fuels in final energy consumption to 40% by 2030 and 30% by 2035, targeting carbon neutrality by 2050. The plan integrates current climate policies and sets specific milestones, including the closure of the last two coal-fired power plants by 2027 and a shift from oil by 2045 through enhanced electrification in transport.
By 2030, two-thirds of new cars are expected to be electric, with manufacturing forecasts of 400,000 units by 2027 and one million by 2030. The roadmap also includes banning gas boilers in new buildings and aims to install one million heat pumps annually by 2030.
France plans to triple solar capacity and add 1.3 gigawatts of onshore wind power yearly, alongside the construction of new nuclear reactors. This strategic shift highlights potential vulnerabilities in energy dependence and the need for accelerated implementation to meet climate goals.
