France's Data Center Energy Consumption and Future Prospects
France aims to be a leading host for data centers, with projections showing energy consumption could rise significantly by 2050. The country faces challenges regarding energy supply and carbon neutrality while prioritizing digital sovereignty.

France currently operates 352 data centers consuming approximately 10 TWh of electricity annually, contributing to 2.2% of the national total. Projections indicate that by 2035, electricity consumption from these facilities could increase by a factor of 3.7, leading to potential consumption of 55 TWh by 2050 from domestic centers, along with 200 TWh from foreign facilities.
This situation raises concerns over the impact on the electrical infrastructure as the country balances digital sovereignty with carbon neutrality goals. While France benefits from a decarbonized electricity supply, demands on the grid will intensify due to growing data center needs and broader electrification ambitions. The challenge lies in achieving efficient energy use while addressing the rising demand driven by digital services.
