Fraunhofer IGB Develops Energy-Efficient Steam Drying Technology
The LowCarbDry project achieves up to 80% energy savings in industrial drying by utilizing superheated steam from renewable electricity. This innovative method addresses significant energy consumption and carbon emissions in sectors like food processing and manufacturing.

The LowCarbDry project developed by Fraunhofer IGB, in collaboration with Evonik Operations GmbH and Pergande Group, reduces energy usage in industrial drying by up to 80% by replacing natural gas with superheated steam. This system integrates heat pumps and predictive scheduling to optimize energy use and minimize emissions.
Superheated steam is used in a closed-loop system, allowing for heat recovery from condensed steam. Additionally, mechanical vapor recompression enhances efficiency by recycling excess steam. This technology can be applied to various dryer types, including belt, drum, and spray dryers, and has been tested across multiple materials, ensuring product quality while significantly lowering energy consumption.
