Mistral AI, founded in April 2023 and valued between €12 billion and €14 billion, aims to develop a sovereign computing infrastructure in collaboration with Nvidia, while the French government invests €8.5 billion in an AI campus to bolster technology initiatives. The French Ministry of Armed Forces signed a framework agreement with Mistral AI to equip military forces with generative AI technologies. Founded in April 2023, Mistral AI has raised nearly €3 billion and is valued between €12 billion and €14 billion.
The company has international investors, including ASML, General Catalyst, and Samsung Venture Investment. A partnership with Microsoft, announced in February 2024, has raised concerns, prompting European Commission scrutiny.
The structural challenge remains a funding gap compared to U.S. competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic. Mistral AI aims to develop a sovereign computing infrastructure in partnership with Nvidia, while securing annualized recurring revenues of €300 million.
The agreement, signed on January 8, 2026, will give access to Mistral’s models to various defense agencies. The French government is also investing €8.5 billion in an AI campus involving Mistral, indicating a new approach to supporting technology champions.
