FSSMAZ Addresses Miners' Concerns Over Licence Cancellations in Zambia
The Federation of Small Scale Mining Associations of Zambia (FSSMAZ) has reassured miners amid fears of licence cancellations, clarifying that no mass revocations are recorded. This follows the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development's cancellation of 3,000 licences for non-compliance, of which 1,200 appeals have been filed.

The Federation of Small Scale Mining Associations of Zambia (FSSMAZ) has confirmed no official mass cancellations of mining licences following recent concerns from small-scale miners. In February, the Ministry of Mines cancelled approximately 3,000 licences due to non-compliance with regulatory requirements, prompting 1,200 appeals.
FSSMAZ President Joseph Mwansa highlighted that notices of intention to cancel licences rather than final revocations were causing confusion. The Ministry's action is part of reforms to enhance governance in the mining sector, which includes critical minerals like copper and lithium.
Stakeholders were assured that local miners' rights would not be compromised unfairly. Compliance reviews are being emphasized, with FSSMAZ urging licence holders to regularize their status to avoid penalties. Failure to engage in compliance could lead to significant repercussions for miners.
