Gabon to End Raw Manganese Exports by 2029, Shifting to Local Metallurgy
Gabon will end raw manganese exports by 2029, transitioning to local metallurgy to capture value addition. As Africa's second-largest manganese producer, with 9.4 million tonnes expected in 2024, Gabon seeks to convert manganese into ferroalloys before export.
The initiative, announced at the Mining Indaba forum, aims to integrate into global value chains, especially for next-generation batteries. Nouvelle Gabon Mining's project, confirmed in June 2025, plans an alloy production unit with an initial capacity of 70,000 tonnes. Supported by the Africa Minerals and Metals Processing platform and $300 million from FEDA, Gabon aims to strengthen its metallurgical sector by 2029.
