Galway City Receives €3.36M EU Grant for WATERWAY Canal Revitalization Project
Galway City Council has secured a €3.36 million EU grant to implement the WATERWAY project, the first local authority in Ireland to receive funding under the European Urban Initiative. The project will install three hydropower turbines in historic canals to generate clean energy for public use and enhance pedestrian and cyclist engagement. The initiative aims to support sustainability and innovation, involving local communities in climate transformation.

Galway City Council has received a €3.36 million EU grant for the WATERWAY project, focusing on revitalizing the city's historic canals. Funded through the European Regional Development Fund, the project will install three small-scale hydropower turbines at sites including the Mill Street Canal and Terryland Waterworks, generating electricity for public consumption.
The project aims to enhance sustainability and community engagement, featuring a Living Lab for educational workshops. The first turbine installation is expected in 2026, with project completion by early 2029.
