Gas Stations in South Korea Authorized to Store Solar Energy for EV Charging

ENERGY STORAGESOLAR ENERGY

Gas stations in South Korea are now permitted to store solar-generated electricity using energy storage systems (ESS) for electric vehicle (EV) charging. Announced on December 29 by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, this regulatory approval follows the 2025 4th Industrial Convergence Regulatory Sandbox Review Committee, which approved eight project tasks.

The initiative, led by Pion Electric Co., Ltd., aims to install solar facilities on gas station land, allowing for stable EV charging regardless of weather conditions. Additionally, a proposal for self-service LPG mini charging stations in rural areas was approved, addressing energy access issues.

This approval will facilitate the installation of 16 mini charging stations in regions like South Jeolla Province and North Gyeongsang Province. The KCCI has supported a total of 901 projects since 2019 under the regulatory sandbox system.
