Gascade Converts 400 km Gas Pipelines for Hydrogen Transport in Germany
Gascade has converted 400 kilometers of gas pipelines from Lubmin to Bitterfeld-Wolfen for hydrogen transport, following the end of Russian gas imports. The investment, in the mid-three-digit million euro range, is supported by KfW funding. Currently, the pipelines contain conventional hydrogen, as sufficient green hydrogen is unavailable. Discussions for capacity usage with industrial partners are ongoing, though no delivery agreements are in place. Green hydrogen prices are around seven euros per kilogram, prompting calls for regulatory changes to simplify production criteria.

Gascade has converted 400 kilometers of gas pipelines from Lubmin to Bitterfeld-Wolfen for hydrogen transport after stopping Russian gas imports. The investment is in the mid-three-digit million euro range and is supported by KfW funding.
The pipelines are currently filled with conventional hydrogen due to a lack of green hydrogen supply. Industrial partners are in discussions regarding capacity usage, but no delivery agreements have been reached. The price of green hydrogen is approximately seven euros per kilogram, necessitating regulatory changes to ease production criteria for renewable fuels.
