GB Railfreight and HyOrc Sign MOU for Project Phoenix to Decarbonise UK Rail Freight
GB Railfreight has partnered with HyOrc Corporation to advance rail decarbonisation in the UK through Project Phoenix, aiming to retrofit diesel locomotives with zero-emission-ready technology. The initiative will pilot a 3MW system, transitioning locomotives from diesel to sustainable fuels, including Natural Gas, LPG, and eventually Hydrogen. This project seeks to reduce emissions while avoiding costly electrification infrastructure.

GB Railfreight (GBRf) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with HyOrc Corporation for Project Phoenix, aimed at retrofitting GBRf's older diesel locomotives with HyOrc's zero-emission propulsion technology. Project Phoenix will test a 3MW system, initially using Natural Gas or LPG, transitioning to 100% Hydrogen.
This approach avoids the need for expensive railway electrification infrastructure and provides a low-risk pathway for decarbonising freight locomotives. The initiative is part of GBRf's strategy to lead in sustainable rail freight and is seeking funding through the Connected Places Catapult Accelerator.
