GE Vernova and IHI Achieve 100% Ammonia Combustion in F-Class Gas Turbines

AMMONIAGAS TURBINES & ENGINESHYDROGEN

GE Vernova and IHI Corp. achieved 100% ammonia combustion in F-class gas turbines, a critical step in their decarbonization initiative. The test at IHI's facility in Japan confirmed full-load operation and emissions compliance, aiming for commercial deployment by 2030.

This collaboration began in June 2021, exploring ammonia as a cost-effective alternative fuel compared to liquid hydrogen. The companies signed a joint development agreement in January 2024 to create a retrofittable combustion system for existing gas turbine models. Japan's policy supports ammonia's role in decarbonizing thermal power, with significant contracts for low-carbon ammonia already in place.
