Gefion Supercomputer Faces Significant Losses in First Full Financial Year
The Gefion supercomputer, launched at a cost of 700 million DKK, reported an operational loss of 72.4 million DKK for 2025. Delays in readiness and unexpected operational complexities contributed to the financial outcome.

In its first full financial year of 2025, the Gefion supercomputer incurred an operational loss of 72.4 million DKK, despite receiving 233 million DKK in new funding from investors. Initially launched in October 2024 with high expectations, the supercomputer was not fully operational until 2025, leading to a total loss of 316 million DKK when hardware depreciation was accounted for.
The initiative, financed by Novo Nordisk Fonden and EIFO, aimed to enhance AI capabilities for Danish businesses and researchers but faced challenges in aligning expectations with its raw technological state. Moving forward, adjustments in communication and operational strategy may be necessary to realize the project's potential.
