Gene Amdahl's Vision for Wafer-Scale Integration in Computing Ahead of Its Time
DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE
Gene Amdahl, known for his role in IBM's System/360, founded Trilogy Systems Corp. in the early 1980s, aiming to innovate with wafer-scale integration, using entire silicon wafers as processors. Trilogy proposed to create supercomputers outperforming IBM's systems while reducing space and cost.
Despite ambitious plans and recruitment efforts, the company faced challenges in commercializing wafer-scale technology and merged with Elxsi in 1985. Amdahl's forward-thinking ideas on fault tolerance and performance density have since influenced modern AI chip developments, validating his early vision.
