German Owner Converts Tesla Battery for Home Energy Storage System
A German Tesla owner has repurposed a used Model 3 battery into a 79 kWh home storage system, enhancing energy security and promoting sustainability. This project exemplifies the growing potential of second life EV batteries in residential applications, addressing energy demands with substantial storage capacity.

A Tesla Model 3 battery has been converted into a 79 kWh home energy storage system, supported by an 11 kW solar installation. This repurposed battery can power an average household for three to five days, showcasing its value beyond automotive use.
In comparison, a Tesla Powerwall 3 offers only 13.5 kWh of storage at a cost of approximately US$15,000. The application of second life batteries is increasingly recognized as vital for future energy systems, especially as first-generation EVs near the end of their service life. As such, the market for battery management solutions is expected to grow, facilitating easier conversions for residential energy use.
