Germany and Denmark Formalize Agreement for Bornholm Energy Island Offshore Wind Project
Germany and Denmark have formalized an agreement to jointly advance the Bornholm Energy Island project, a major initiative in European offshore wind energy. Announced at the North Sea Summit in Hamburg, the project will create an energy island in the Baltic Sea to collect and distribute up to 3 GW of electricity from offshore wind farms, connecting directly to the national grids of both countries.
Bornholm will serve as the energy hub with a high voltage direct current (HVDC) conversion station. It will feature a 1.2 GW connection to Zealand, Denmark, over 226 kilometers, and a 2 GW connection to Germany spanning approximately 180 kilometers, mainly offshore.
The project is designed for future expansion, potentially accommodating an additional 800 MW of wind capacity and connections to other European countries. It is part of the Energy Highways initiative and classified as a Project of Common Interest (PCI), receiving €645 million in funding from the Connecting Europe Facility.
