Germany Emerges as Europe's Leading BESS Market by 2025 with 2.4 GW Installed Capacity
Germany's BESS market is set to reach 2.4 GW of installed capacity by the end of 2025, with significant investments totaling €7.5 billion. The market faces regulatory changes as key exemptions expire in 2029, impacting future project economics.

By the end of 2025, Germany is projected to achieve an installed capacity of 2.4 GW for utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) and a total of 3.5 GWh of energy capacity, marking a significant increase from previous years. The total market, including home storage, encompasses 16 GW of capacity from over 2.2 million systems.
Investment in BESS projects in Europe reached €7.5 billion in 2025, with Germany leading the market. The BESS pipeline in Germany stands at 9.5 GW, with 5.6 GW expected to be operational by the end of 2027.
However, only 40% of projected capacity came online in 2025, highlighting network connection challenges. Regulatory changes such as the expiration of the net charge exemption in 2029 present risks for future projects. These dynamics indicate potential volatility in project financing and market stability, emphasizing the need for strategic planning for stakeholders.
