Germany Launches New Guidelines for Biogas Plants to Market Biomethane as Fuel
The BIOKRAFT initiative, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Protection (BMLEH), aims to promote the processing of biogas and the commercialization of biomethane as a fuel. Following the European Renewable Energy Directive (RED), since 2018, biomethane producers can participate in greenhouse gas (GHG) quota trading in the transport sector, creating new business opportunities for agricultural biogas plants. This offers a viable option for the continued operation of biogas facilities after the initial 20-year support period under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG).

The BIOKRAFT initiative, supported by the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Consumer Protection (BMLEH) through the Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR), focuses on the commercialization of biomethane as a fuel. The European Renewable Energy Directive (RED) has allowed biomethane producers since 2018 to engage in greenhouse gas (GHG) quota trading within the transport sector. This development presents a new business opportunity for agricultural biogas plants, offering a compelling option for continued operation after the first 20-year support period under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG).
