Germany's 43 Million Tons of Lithium Faces Extraction Challenges
Germany's potential lithium reserves of 43 million tons could reduce Europe's reliance on imports, but technical and economic feasibility remains uncertain. The RoLiXX project aims to determine the viability of extracting lithium from deep saline brines under extreme conditions.

Germany's lithium reserves, estimated at 43 million tons, represent a significant opportunity for Europe to decrease dependency on external supplies. However, the extraction process faces challenges due to the extreme depths of 3 to 5 kilometers and complex saline brine compositions.
The RoLiXX project focuses on Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE), which could potentially mitigate the environmental impact compared to traditional mining methods. The next 2 to 3 years will be critical in assessing the feasibility of DLE at scale and determining if the project can move towards industrial production. Success could position Germany as a key player in the lithium market, influencing Europe's critical raw materials strategy.
