Germany's Battery Storage Capacity Expands Significantly in Q1 2026
In Q1 2026, Germany installed 2 GWh of new battery storage, a 66% increase year-over-year, bringing total capacity to 28 GWh. Large-scale systems led this growth, reflecting the increasing significance of battery storage in energy management.

In the first quarter of 2026, Germany's battery storage capacity increased by 2 gigawatt-hours, a 66% rise from the previous year. The total installed capacity now reaches approximately 28 gigawatt-hours across 2.5 million systems.
Notably, large-scale storage systems contributed over one gigawatt-hour, nearly quadrupling last year's figures. However, domestic storage expansion remained stagnant at around 0.74 gigawatts. BSW-Solar indicates that this capacity could meet the daily electricity needs of approximately 3 million households. Concerns arise regarding legislative plans that may disadvantage battery storage in power plant auctions, highlighting the need for specific promotion of storage solutions.
