Ghana and UNIDO Collaborate on Circular Economy Textile Innovation Centre

CIRCULAR ECONOMY & RECYCLING

Ghana and UNIDO are progressing plans to establish a Circular Economy Innovation and Textile Testing Centre, addressing textile waste and promoting industrial development. Funded by Italy, the project aims to improve circular economy solutions in Ghana's textile sector, providing laboratory testing and technical services.

Ghana imports over 143,000 tonnes of secondhand clothing annually, with significant waste contributing to pollution. The centre could enable the conversion of discarded textiles into various industrial applications.

Discussions included an Italy-Ghana Circular Economy Dialogue in June 2026 to attract private sector interest. The Ghana Circular Economy Centre project aims to validate 200 circular technologies and mobilise $10 million for ventures over five years.
