Gibraltar's Battery Storage System Operational to Prevent Power Outages
Gibraltar's Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is now operational, enhancing electrical supply stability following a successful test period. This system was activated recently to prevent a power outage caused by an incident at the LNG terminal.

The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Gibraltar's power plant has commenced operations after its testing phase, which began in December. This installation aims to enhance the stability of the electrical supply, providing immediate backup during outages at the North Mole power station.
Recently, the BESS successfully took over the load when a gas terminal incident halted one of the plant's engines, preventing a power cut. The system can supply electricity for up to one hour, allowing for the startup of backup generators.
The government expects the investment in the BESS to be recouped in approximately two years, providing economic and environmental benefits, unlike previous rental generators. However, the system does not prevent outages caused by distribution network damage, prompting ongoing investments to mitigate such issues.
