Gifu University Launches Ammonia-Hydrogen Demonstration Hub with Industry Partners
Gifu University, in collaboration with four industry partners, has inaugurated a demonstration platform for ammonia and hydrogen utilization in Gifu Prefecture, Japan. The facility, part of Japan's Strategic Innovation Promotion Program, aims to advance commercialization of clean energy technologies by addressing key challenges in ammonia as an energy carrier.

In April 2026, Gifu University launched a demonstration platform for ammonia and hydrogen, in partnership with Resonac Holdings, Mitsubishi Kakoki Kaisha, Tokyo Gas, and Miura Industry. The facility, capable of supplying 200 Nm³/h of ammonia, supports the development of five distinct systems including a zero-carbon portable generator and an ammonia reformer unit, with full-scale testing planned for fiscal 2026.
This initiative aligns with Japan's Hydrogen Society Promotion Act, which recognizes ammonia as a critical energy source. The consortium aims to develop a co-creation market platform for commercialization, with social implementation targeted for fiscal 2028. Successful outcomes from ongoing performance evaluations and validation tests will be crucial to meeting the commercialization timeline.
