Global Battery Storage Capacity Reaches 108 GW in 2025 Amid Rapid Market Growth
Global battery storage capacity surged by 40% in 2025, hitting a record 108 GW, with China leading installations. This growth underscores the increasing importance of battery storage in flexible electricity systems and renewable energy integration.

In 2025, global battery storage installations achieved a record 108 GW, marking a 40% increase from the previous year. China dominated the market, contributing over 63 GW, while the United States added 19 GW, reflecting a 60% year-on-year increase.
Emerging markets like Australia, Saudi Arabia, and Chile also experienced significant growth, with Australia nearly increasing its installations ninefold to 8 GW. Battery storage now represents around 18% of Australia's dispatchable generation capacity.
The average utility-scale battery provided three hours of storage in 2025, up from two hours in 2023. Despite promising growth, regulatory challenges and permitting delays remain barriers. Continued cost reductions and renewable energy expansion indicate a vital role for battery storage in future power systems.
