Global Data Center Electricity Consumption to Rise by 26% in 2026
The anticipated increase in global electricity consumption by data centers highlights the growing demand for AI services. This surge underscores the critical need for reliable power sources to support expanding AI capabilities.

Data centers are projected to consume 565 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in 2026, up from 447 TWh in 2025, representing a 26% increase. The demand for computational power driven by AI services is the primary factor behind this rise.
Additionally, the electricity demand is expected to increase to 132 gigawatts (GW) in 2026, compared to 104 GW in 2025, with projections indicating a near tripling to 290 GW by 2030. This escalating energy requirement raises concerns regarding power availability and infrastructure readiness to support the growth of AI technologies.
