GlobalConnect to Triple Capacity of Nordic Backbone Network with €40 Million Investment
GlobalConnect is investing €40 million to triple the capacity of its Nordic backbone network, spanning approximately 1,250 kilometers and connecting major cities like Stockholm and Oslo. The upgrade, set to run from late 2025 to 2027, will enhance data reliability and capacity in response to growing digital demands, including new submarine cables linking Sweden with Finland and other regions. This initiative is part of the broader Bifrost program aimed at modernizing over 3,000 kilometers of fiber networks across the Nordic area.

GlobalConnect is undertaking a major upgrade of the Nordic backbone network to triple its capacity over approximately 1,250 kilometers, connecting Stockholm, Göteborg, Oslo, and Helsingfors. The project, which began in late 2025 and is set to continue until 2027, aims to enhance data capacity and reliability in response to rising digital demands, driven largely by data centers and AI clusters.
The investment, estimated at €40 million, includes upgrades in 18 Swedish municipalities and the installation of new high-capacity cables along existing routes. Additionally, new submarine cables will connect Sweden with Finland, Åland, Estonia, and Gotland, spanning about 240 kilometers. This initiative is part of a larger Bifrost program to modernize over 3,000 kilometers of fiber networks in the Nordic region, emphasizing the importance of robust digital infrastructure for secure and fast digital services.
