Gonets Satellite System Marks 30 Years as Russia's Pioneer in Mobile Satellite Communications
The Gonets Satellite System, part of Roscosmos, celebrates its 30th anniversary as a successful example of conversion from military to civilian use. The first Gonets-D1 spacecraft launched in 1996, significantly contributing to mobile satellite communications, with a second-generation system operational since 2015. Starting January 1, 2026, Gonets stations will be the primary monitoring systems for Russia's fishing fleet, replacing British Inmarsat stations.

The Gonets Satellite System, developed from military communications satellites, celebrates its 30th anniversary, highlighting Russia's leadership in mobile satellite communications. The first three Gonets-D1 spacecraft were launched on February 19, 1996, from Plesetsk Spaceport.
The system's first-generation satellites exceeded their expected lifespan, contributing significantly to Russian space technology. The second-generation Gonets system has been operational since 2015 and serves users in areas lacking terrestrial coverage, including the North and South Poles. As of January 1, 2026, Gonets stations will replace British Inmarsat systems for monitoring Russia's fishing fleet.
