Google, Amazon, and Microsoft Develop Custom Chips to Compete with Nvidia
DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE
Google's CEO Sundar Pichai announced the new generation of Trillium chips for AI in May 2024 to reduce reliance on Nvidia. Meta is reportedly negotiating with Google for specialized chips. Google has been designing its own chips since 2015, optimizing TPU for AI training.
Amazon's Graviton and Trainium chips have also improved data center performance and reduced costs. Microsoft launched Cobalt and Maia chips for Azure cloud optimization. This strategy aims to decrease dependence on Nvidia, despite its continued market strength.
Google is exploring independent use of its TPU technology. Nvidia's market presence remains strong.
