Google and UCSD Collaborate on Low-Carbon Cloud Using Retired Pixel Phones
Google and UCSD will repurpose 2,000 retired Pixel phones to create a low-carbon cloud data center, launching in Fall 2026. This initiative aims to minimize e-waste and provide affordable computing resources for academic purposes.

Google and the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) plan to develop a low-carbon cloud using 2,000 retired Pixel phones, set to launch in Fall 2026. The project involves transforming phone motherboards into a cluster that offers computing resources equivalent to 50 traditional servers, aimed at academic use.
By removing non-essential components, the initiative addresses both carbon emissions from motherboard production and safety risks associated with batteries in data centers. Preliminary tests indicate that a micro-cluster of 20 phones can effectively handle parallel computing course loads from over 75 students. The project could significantly impact educational access to computing resources while contributing to sustainability efforts.
