Google Data Center in Austria: Energy Consumption and Infrastructure Challenges
Google's new data center in Kronstorf, Austria, is projected to consume 1.31 TWh annually, equivalent to 375,000 households. The project's first phase will require 150 MW of connection capacity, potentially doubling the existing power demand of national data centers.

A second phase is planned, increasing power needs to 500 MW and consumption to 4.4 TWh. The Austrian Power Grid has indicated that while the infrastructure can initially support the project, a new 380 kV high-voltage transmission line will be needed for the second phase, projected to be operational by 2032.
Operators typically utilize long-term Power Purchase Agreements for energy supply, often sourcing from multiple providers across Europe. Concerns about the environmental impact of such large-scale operations have been raised, emphasizing the need for an integrated national data center strategy to enhance digital infrastructure in Austria.
