Google Partners with Voltus for Innovative 100 MW Virtual Power Plant Agreement
Google has entered a three-year agreement with Voltus to utilize up to 100 MW from a virtual power plant in PJM. This partnership is significant as it marks the first instance of a hyperscaler financing a virtual power plant directly, aiming to streamline energy capacity for data centers and provide economic benefits to local communities.

Google and Voltus have established a three-year agreement to implement a virtual power plant (VPP) in PJM, aggregating 100 MW of distributed energy resources (DERs) from local businesses and homes. This partnership allows Google to fund and utilize these resources, converting capacity demand into economic benefits for PJM users.
The BYOC program enables data centers to finance regional flexibility resources, effectively bridging the capacity gap anticipated through the 2030s. Voltus's VPPs are expected to become operational by 2027.
This collaboration could set a precedent for how large energy users manage capacity needs, promoting cleaner energy deployment while enhancing grid reliability. The initiative comes amid a broader shift towards optimizing existing infrastructure to reduce consumer electricity costs.
