Google Partners with Voltus for Virtual Power Plant to Aid Data Centers
Google has entered an agreement with Voltus to develop a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) in the U.S. to support energy demands at data centers. This initiative may address energy supply challenges by aggregating distributed energy resources, but participation incentives remain critical for success.

Google and Voltus are collaborating to establish a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) aimed at supporting local data center energy needs. Voltus will manage the VPP by aggregating devices such as electric vehicles and smart thermostats, while Google covers implementation costs.
The project is expected to enhance energy capacity by up to 100 megawatts and is set for operation in 2027, contributing to the PJM network. However, questions about incentivizing data centers to reduce energy consumption during peak demand remain. Existing studies suggest that financial incentives alone may not guarantee participation, indicating potential challenges in the broader adoption of such programs.
