Google's Data Center in Feluy, Belgium Faces Electrical Connection Delays
Google's data center project in Feluy, Belgium, has received its permit but faces delays due to a lack of high-voltage electricity, with only medium voltage available until upgrades by Elia are completed in 2029. The $5 billion investment plan is now in question as the region's electrical network saturation hampers various projects and economic zones remain vacant. A new decree aims to manage congestion and prioritize projects based on their economic relevance, highlighting the need for long-term infrastructure improvements amid significant energy transition challenges.

Google's data center project in Feluy, Belgium has received its permit but currently lacks access to high-voltage electricity. The Walloon Economy Minister confirmed that only medium voltage is available until upgrades by Elia are completed, expected by 2029.
A temporary solution with local distributor Ores will connect Google to medium voltage (25 MVA) until Elia can provide high voltage. The $5 billion investment plan includes sites with secured energy supply, but the viability of Feluy's project is questioned.
The electrical network saturation affects the broader Walloon region, with economic zones remaining vacant and various projects stalled due to lack of electricity. Elia reports a surge in connection requests, anticipating nearly 2 gigawatts of increased demand soon.
A new decree allows for flexible connection contracts to manage congestion and prioritize projects based on economic relevance. Long-term infrastructure upgrades are needed as the region faces significant energy transition challenges.
