Google's Willow quantum computer, operating at near absolute zero with 105 qubits, has achieved a benchmark task in minutes that would take classical supercomputers 10 septillion years. This technology, which employs Quantum Echoes for molecular analysis, has potential applications in medicine, energy, and food production, while also raising concerns about future encryption vulnerabilities. As global competition intensifies, China invests $15 billion in quantum technology, with the UK also increasing its efforts to enhance quantum capabilities.

Google's quantum computer, Willow, located in Santa Barbara, California, operates at temperatures near absolute zero and utilizes 105 qubits. It completed a benchmark task in minutes that would take classical supercomputers approximately 10 septillion years.
Willow leverages a method called Quantum Echoes to analyze molecular structures. Google's quantum lead, Hartmut Neven, highlighted the potential applications of this technology in medicine, energy, and food production.
Experts note that quantum computers could disrupt current encryption standards, leading to a 'Harvest Now, Decrypt Later' strategy among institutions. China's investment in quantum technology is estimated at $15 billion, with significant research output and development of competitive quantum systems.
The UK is also increasing its investment to enhance national quantum capabilities. Researchers aim to scale error-corrected quantum systems for practical applications, driving international competition and collaboration.
