Governor Hochul Proposes 5 GW Nuclear Expansion and Data Center Energy Reforms in NY
Governor Hochul proposed a significant expansion of nuclear energy in New York, aiming for 5 gigawatts of new capacity, alongside reforms requiring data centers to either pay higher electricity rates or supply their own energy. Critics, including Food & Water Watch, warn that these initiatives could raise energy costs for residents and advocate for a moratorium on new data center constructions due to their projected unsustainable energy and water consumption.

In her State of the State address, Governor Hochul proposed that data centers either pay more for electricity or provide their own energy supply. She also announced plans to construct 5 gigawatts of new nuclear energy capacity in New York.
Critics, including Food & Water Watch, argue these measures will increase energy costs for New Yorkers and call for a moratorium on new data center constructions due to unsustainable energy and water consumption. Energy demand from U.S. data centers is projected to triple from 2023 to 2028.
