Governor Jim Pillen has wrapped up a fruitful trade mission to Japan, a trip designed to fortify Nebraska's economic, cultural, and educational ties with one of its primary international partners. This visit involved strategic meetings with influential Japanese importers and a concerted push for Nebraska's biofuels, notably ethanol and sustainable aviation fuel. Governor Pillen emphasized the significant opportunities that lie ahead, particularly in light of Japan's increasing demand for ethanol as the country plans to boost its blending targets to 10% by 2030 and 20% by 2040.

During his address in Tokyo, Governor Pillen presented to a gathering of ethanol buyers at an event organized by the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. Grains Council.

He underscored the sustainability and competitive edge of Nebraska's biofuel industry, which is well-positioned to meet Japan’s evolving energy needs. U.S. Ambassador to Japan, George Glass, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the Midwest's capacity to fulfill Japan's clean energy objectives. Presentations from the Nebraska Corn Board and Union Pacific further reinforced the state's commitment to sustainable agriculture and its pivotal role in national transportation infrastructure.

The final day of the trade mission featured a visit to Kawasaki's executives, where the Nebraska delegation expressed gratitude for the company's longstanding presence in the state. Since 1974, Kawasaki's manufacturing plant in Lincoln has produced an array of vehicles and railcars, with a notable expansion in contracts from the Metropolitan Transit Authority in New York City.

As the world's fourth-largest economy, Japan remains a crucial trade ally for Nebraska. In 2024, the state exported nearly $699 million in goods to Japan, a testament to the robust economic relationship that continues to evolve since the establishment of the Nebraska Center Japan in 2006, which serves as a conduit for Japanese companies seeking opportunities in the state. The potential for further deepening this relationship is immense, setting a promising course for Nebraska's economic future.
