GPL Secures $27.3M Contract with PowerChina for Battery Energy Storage System
Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has contracted PowerChina for a $27.3 million Battery Energy Storage System, enhancing grid stability. The project aims to add 30 MW of capacity, improving reliability and integrating renewable energy sources.
Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has entered a $27.37 million contract with PowerChina International Group Limited for the engineering, procurement, and construction of a 60 MWh / 30 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
This initiative will install two lithium-ion battery systems at the New Sophia and Goedverwagting substations, adding 30 MW to the GPL grid and enhancing the stability of the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS). The project will integrate with the Guyana National Control Centre using advanced SCADA and energy management systems and is expected to be completed within eight months. The implementation is aimed at reducing outages and supporting renewable energy integration.
