Gree Electric to Start Mass Production of Silicon Carbide Chips for Energy Storage and Logistics in 2024
Gree Electric Appliances in China will commence mass production of silicon carbide chips for photovoltaic energy storage systems and logistics vehicles in 2024. The company, based in Zhuhai, has already produced over two million silicon carbide chips for household products, enhancing energy efficiency in air conditioners.
The new production will also extend to devices used in central air conditioning chillers and logistics vehicles. A newly built factory supports both six-inch and eight-inch wafers and offers automotive-grade testing and foundry services.
Gree aims to replace half of the automotive chips used by GAC Group with its own products. Established in 2023, Gree's electronic components unit is projected to have an annual capacity of 240,000 six-inch silicon carbide wafers, with cumulative chip sales expected to exceed 300 million units by 2025. Despite challenges from price competition and reliance on imports, Gree seeks to enhance partnerships in the chip design and manufacturing sectors.
