Greece Aims for 6.8 GW Battery Storage Capacity by 2030
Greece targets a significant increase in battery storage capacity to enhance grid resilience and stabilize electricity prices. The government aims to achieve 6.8 GW of storage by 2030, up from 630 MW at the start of 2023.

Greece's Ministry of Environment and Energy has prioritized energy storage as a key element of its energy transition strategy. The country plans to expand its battery storage capacity from 630 megawatts (MW) at the beginning of 2023 to 6.8 gigawatts (GW) by 2030.
Key initiatives include 4.7 GW entering the market unsubsidized, the conversion of decommissioned power plant permits under Law 5151/2024, and a goal of reaching 1 GW by the end of 2024. Battery costs have dropped significantly, from $1,474 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in 2010 to a projected $108 by 2025, supporting price stability in electricity markets. This advancement may reduce reliance on more expensive natural gas plants during peak demand periods.
