Greece Launches First Battery Energy Storage Systems in Electricity Market
Greece's inaugural battery energy storage systems have been integrated into the Hellenic Energy Exchange. This milestone marks a significant advancement in the country's energy landscape, with 44 MWh scheduled for delivery on April 1.

Greece has launched its first battery energy storage systems (BESS), integrated into the Hellenic Energy Exchange’s day-ahead and intraday markets. The systems, operated by Energeiaki Techniki, are currently undergoing a trial period lasting between two to six months.
Two facilities are involved: Petra in Kozani (7.8 MW, 15.6 MWh) and Dokos in Komotini (8.9 MW, 17.8 MWh), both of which have secured contracts for difference and state aid. An additional 300 MW of battery capacity is ready for deployment, with new installations expected by the end of April.
M Star is also developing a 266.4 MW lithium-ion battery station in Domokos, which will utilize 84 inverters and have a capacity of 532.8 MWh. Shanghai Electric Power controls 70% of M Star, while Solar Bright holds the remainder.
