Green Methanol Corridor Project Initiated in South Africa's Vaal SEZ
The Green Methanol Corridor project aims to establish South Africa's first wastewater-to-green-methanol facility in the Vaal SEZ. A $4 million investment from Climate Investor Three through the SA-H2 Fund supports its development, targeting financial close by late 2027.

Located in the Vaal Special Economic Zone, the Green Methanol Corridor project is being developed by Green eFuels Producers (GeFP) and aims to produce green methanol from municipal sewage. The facility will convert approximately 90,000 t/y of sewage sludge into 14,300 t/y of green methanol, utilizing a hybrid Power-to-X and Bio-to-X technology model that integrates wastewater treatment and renewable energy.
Climate Investor Three has committed $4 million for development costs, with potential equity funding of up to $26 million. The project is expected to create around 300 construction jobs and 60 permanent positions, while also returning 50,000 to 60,000 m³/y of water to the local utility.
Financial closure is anticipated in late 2027, with operations commencing in 2029. This initiative could reduce CO2 emissions by 118,950 t/y and serve regulated export markets.
