Grid Limitations Halt Green Hydrogen Projects in Northern Norway
Over 300 megawatts of planned green hydrogen projects in northern Norway face uncertainty due to Statnett's decision to halt new grid connections for large-scale initiatives. This decision impacts multiple projects, including those from Aker Solutions, Narvik Hydrogen, and Glomfjord Hydrogen, effectively placing them in a state of suspension until further notice.

Statnett has announced a temporary halt on new electrical grid connections for projects requiring more than 5 megawatts in northern Norway, impacting at least three green hydrogen and ammonia initiatives totaling 307 megawatts. This decision stems from a rapidly increasing electricity demand driven by industrial expansion, with an expected rise of about 330 megawatts from industrial projects alone over the next decade.
Statnett's assessment reveals that existing infrastructure cannot support this demand, leading to potential bottlenecks and increased risk of electrical shortages. The prioritization of smaller connections under 5 megawatts aims to ensure energy supply for small and medium enterprises, while larger projects face considerable delays. This situation underscores a broader challenge within Norway's hydrogen sector regarding access to stable and cost-effective electricity.
