Growth of Data Centers in Rural U.S. Areas and AI Impact
Pew Research indicates two-thirds of new data centers are being constructed in rural regions of the U.S., with over 1,500 in development. The shift is driven by the demand for edge computing due to artificial intelligence advancements.

Pew Research Center reports that more than 3,000 data centers are currently operating in the U.S., with a notable increase expected as over 1,500 additional centers are in various stages of development. The trend shows that 42% of Americans live near an existing or planned data center.
Factors contributing to this growth include surplus power and lower land costs in rural areas. As the U.S. leads globally with more than 5,400 data centers compared to China’s 449, competition intensifies in AI infrastructure.
By the end of 2025, AI data center power usage is projected to reach 29.6 gigawatts. This rapid development may alter market dynamics significantly.
