GSR and DORD Collaborate on Deepsea Mining Trial in Clarion-Clipperton Zone
Global Sea Mineral Resources (GSR) and Japan's Deep Ocean Resources Development (DORD) are set to undertake a joint deepsea mining demonstration. This initiative aims to co-develop polymetallic nodule resources critical for clean energy technologies.

Global Sea Mineral Resources (GSR) and Deep Ocean Resources Development (DORD) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to conduct a deepsea mining trial in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ). The project includes a system integration test (SIT) planned for the early 2030s to validate an integrated commercial-scale mining system at depths over 4000 meters.
This trial will also encompass a comprehensive environmental impact assessment, utilizing data from GSR and DORD's extensive exploration efforts. The partnership reflects the growing strategic significance of diversifying critical mineral supply chains, crucial for technologies like electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy. Japan's government has prioritized these resources under its Fourth Basic Plan on Ocean Policy.
