Guinea Approves Chalco Alumina Refinery to Boost Domestic Production
Guinea's government has authorized the construction of an alumina refinery by Chalco, aiming to enhance local alumina production by 2030. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to leverage the country's bauxite resources and strengthen its position in the global alumina market.

Guinea's President Mamadi Doumbouya has approved a mining agreement for Chalco to build an alumina refinery in Boffa. This project aligns with plans to construct five to six additional refineries by 2030 to increase alumina production capacity from the current 360 metric tons.
Guinea, the largest bauxite producer globally, seeks to develop a robust domestic alumina industry, currently dominated by China, which produced 93 million metric tons in 2025. Investment and reliable electricity supply are critical for the success of these projects. Without these, Guinea may struggle to realize its ambitions, which include establishing a national capacity of 7 million metric tons annually.
