Guinea Considers Bauxite Export Quotas Amid Price Decline and Rising Freight Costs
Guinea, the largest bauxite producer, is in talks to implement export quotas for mining companies to regulate ore supply and prevent price drops. Mines and Geology Minister Bouna Sylla stated that the measures aim to protect revenues and align production with feasibility studies. Bauxite prices have nearly halved since early 2025, impacting revenues as Guinea's exports increased by over 25% to 183 million tons, primarily to China. The government also seeks to boost domestic alumina refining and has previously canceled mining licenses for non-compliance.

Guinea is negotiating with mining companies to implement export quotas for bauxite to control supply and stabilize prices. Mines and Geology Minister Bouna Sylla indicated that the measures, which may take effect soon, aim to prevent a decrease in company revenues and government tax revenue.
Bauxite prices have fallen significantly since early 2025, leading to increased exports to 183 million tons last year, mostly to China. The government is also focused on enhancing domestic alumina refining capabilities and has previously canceled licenses for non-compliance. Guinea produces over 40% of global bauxite and is looking to regulate its mining sector due to rising freight costs and market dynamics.
