Guyana Government Seeks Indian Firms for Amaila Falls Hydropower Project Revival

HYDRO POWER

The Government of Guyana is inviting Indian companies to bid for the Amaila Falls Hydropower project, initially introduced in 2011 and delayed multiple times. High Commissioner Dhanamkumar Seeraj announced an open expression of interest for the project, which aims to generate over 165 megawatts (MW) of electricity.

The revised Request for Proposals (RFP) specifies the scope of work, including a hydro dam, plant, substation, and a 23 square kilometer storage reservoir. The project will be executed under a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model, with the government purchasing electricity from the selected private developer.

Interested firms must have completed three hydro projects of at least 100MW each in the past 15 years, with prequalification submissions due by February 17, 2026. Previous attempts to advance the project have faced obstacles, including stalled negotiations with China Railway Group Limited in 2021.
