H2CAST Project Advances with Component Transport to Etzel for Hydrogen Facility Assembly

HYDROGEN

Two large components for the H2CAST hydrogen purification facility began transportation from Rotterdam, stopping in Wilhelmshaven before reaching Etzel. This marks a significant milestone for the H2CAST pilot project, with final assembly scheduled for Q1 2026.

The project, involving STORAG ETZEL and Gasunie, aims to enhance hydrogen infrastructure in Northwest Europe, focusing on safe storage and purification in salt caverns. Modular systems will be implemented for hydrogen processing, supported by advanced monitoring technology.

Following commissioning, an extensive testing phase will occur, with results anticipated by the end of 2026. The initiative aims to facilitate energy transition and increase supply security, with potential expansion of storage capacity in Etzel from 75 to 99 caverns.
